From Beaver Ridge to Karns: A 1950s Vote
The community now called Karns was originally known as Beaver Ridge, sitting in the Beaver Creek Valley between Beaver Ridge and Copper Ridge. After the first Karns High School building went up in 1913 on land donated by the Cobb family, residents voted in the 1950s to officially rename their community for Thomas Conner Karns, Knox County's first Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Between Two Ridges, Farmland Meets Subdivisions
Much of Karns didn't convert from working farms and pastures to subdivisions until the postwar decades, later than Knoxville's older in-town neighborhoods, so newer construction sits directly alongside land still in agricultural use. Being nestled between Beaver Ridge and Copper Ridge means the valley floor collects runoff from both slopes, and the karst limestone underneath adds sinkhole and irregular-drainage risk to that already low-lying position.
