Settled Two Years Before Knoxville Itself
Powell traces its roots to 1789, two years before Knoxville was even founded, when Moses White built a log cabin near Beaver Creek. Early settlers included Stockley Donelson -- Andrew Jackson's brother-in-law, whose home still stands on Bishop Lane -- and Revolutionary War veteran John Manifee, who built a fort and trading post nearby in the late 1780s. The community later took its name from the Powell Station train stop, honoring local resident Columbus Powell, and its 1931 Airplane Filling Station, shaped like a plane, earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
Limestone Ground Along a Historic Downtown
Unlike many surrounding communities, Powell kept its own small downtown as the hub of north Knox County, with a school district organized in the 1950s cementing that identity. Limestone bedrock under much of northern Knox County produces the same sinkhole and irregular-drainage risk here that shows up closer to the city, so older lots near Powell's historic core face the same karst considerations as its newer subdivisions.
